A sophomore biology class sparked a passion that would carry Claudia Rubio `95 from Gonzaga Prep to the forefront of cancer research. Today, as a principal scientist at Gilead Sciences, she is helping develop new therapies while inspiring the next generation of women to see themselves in STEM.
That passion never wavered. By the time Claudia began applying to colleges, she knew she wanted to become a research scientist, a goal that would guide her from Gonzaga Prep to a career dedicated to scientific discovery and biomedical innovation.
Her path began at the University of Washington, where she was awarded the prestigious NASA Space Grant Scholarship and earned a bachelor’s degree in microbiology. She later completed her Ph.D. in biochemistry and molecular biology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), one of the nation's leading biomedical research institutions.
As an undergraduate, her scholarship afforded Claudia the opportunity to pursue her passion for research by working as a laboratory scientist at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (FHCRC). Through mentorship and training at FHCRC, she honed her scientific skills and decided to pursue a doctorate in molecular biology. She was accepted to a renowned doctoral research program at UCSF where she studied molecular mechanisms involved in cellular stress responses. Following her doctoral dissertation, she was selected as a Presidential Postdoctoral Fellow at the Novartis Institute for Biomedical Research, where she applied cutting-edge technology to study the cancer genome and discovered potential new approaches for treating cancer.
As a child of immigrants and a woman in science, Claudia had to persevere through many barriers in her professional career. In an era when Latin American women are significantly underrepresented in many STEM fields, she has forged ahead with determination, curiosity, and confidence. Her success has not only opened doors for her own career but also demonstrates what is possible for the generations of women who will follow.
As Gonzaga Prep celebrates 50 years of coeducation, Claudia's story highlights the transformative impact of empowering young women to pursue their passions without hesitation. She is part of a generation of alumnae who entered fields where women were often underrepresented and, through their accomplishments, helped create a more inclusive future. Her journey serves as a powerful example that talent, perseverance, and ambition determine what someone can achieve.
Today, Claudia is passionate about encouraging young women to seek careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. She believes representation matters and hopes that more girls will see themselves as future scientists, researchers, innovators, and leaders.
