When Gonzaga Prep first welcomed young women onto campus in 1975, it was clear that new traditions would be needed to bring students together in meaningful ways. Out of that hope, the first Search retreat was held in the spring of 1976.
Originally designed for seniors, Search quickly became more than just a weekend away. For countless alumni, it remains the most transformative experience of their Prep years.
Part of the magic of Search lies in its mystery. Families go along with a generational “code of silence,” clamming up whenever a future Searcher enters the room.
The secret phrases through the years, which only add to the anticipation:
• Fred Loves You
• TBIYTC
• Don’t forget rain gear
• The peanut
• You need a rock
• Bring all your underwear
But beneath the playful secrecy lies something deeply powerful. Search offers students friendships that last a lifetime, a deeper understanding of their peers, and an awakening to the love of Jesus at just the right moment in their lives.
While the details of Search have shifted over the decades, its heart remains the same. For 50 years, it has been a place where Prep students discover connection, faith, and a community that endures long after graduation.
Some of the students on that first Search were Brad Rothrock, Tim Reilly, Julia Sweeney (Saturday Night Live), Madge (Margaret) Brasch, Jim Brasch, Mike Kelly, Missy Mannix, Donna Higgins, and Craig LaRoux.
