Spring Sports seasons wrap up

Teams that went to to stateBBoys golf, girls tennis, and girls track and field all sent student-athletes to State.

 

Spring sports at Gonzaga Prep offer such a broad variety of opportunities to compete that participation is sky-high. This year, 373 students—more than half of the student body—competed in seven different sports. Most of May was time for playoffs and Bullpups were in the mix in Districts, Regionals, and State Championships, and earned all-GSL honors for their hard work.

BOYS GOLF capped a stellar season with a 4th-place team finish in the State 4A Championships The team was led by junior Alex Cooke who took 2nd place and freshman Dillon Schrock who placed 7th. Senior Matthew Durkin, junior Patrick Reilly, and John Malsam rounded out the team. Cooke was named GSL golfer of the year, while Matthew Durkin was named 1st Team All-GSL.

GIRLS GOLF Freshman Lisette Durkin earned a trip to the State Championships placing 23rd in a field of 88 golfers. Durkin and junior Lucy Lynn were both named 2nd Team all-GSL.

GIRLS TENNIS went undefeated in Greater Spokane League play on their way to a league title. They rolled through Districts and sent to State singles champ Juliet McFarland, doubles champions Carly Walton and Kate Palelek, and doubles runners-up Marie Loroz and Savannah Crisp. It was the team’s best showing in a dozen years. The All-GSL honors were loaded with Bullpups: 1st Team - Juniors Juliet McFarland and Kate Palelek; 2nd Team: Junior Carly Walton, seniors Marie Loroz and Savannah Crisp; Honorable Mention: Junior Sydney Henneberg. Coach Jason Chapman was named Coach of the Year.

BASEBALL finished with a 16-8 record and won 9 straight league games at the end of the season to earn the top 4A seed at Districts. Senior Luciano Reynolds led the way offensively for the Bullpups. He was honored with the Dave Machtolf Award for excellence and leadership in baseball and was also voted 1st Team All-GSL for a second straight season. On the mound, senior Mike Cunneely was Gonzaga Prep's Pitcher of the Year as well as 1st Team All-GSL for a second straight season. Senior Robbie Burnett also earned a 1st Team honor and senior Turk Riggan earned a 2nd Team recognition. Seniors Jack Brown, Rob Halaas-Driscoll, Max Williams, Marcus Lopez and Trygve Grimsby, and sophomore Hunter Derr earned All-GSL honorable mentions.

FASTPITCH SOFTBALL Completed their season with the best finish in a decade, including a first-round District Playoff win over Central Valley. The team was led by seniors Bailey Benson and Liza Kovich, who earned–respectively–first and second-team all-GSL honors.

BOYS SOCCER finished with a 5-4 conference record and notched a 1st-round win in District playoffs before losing out. All-GSL honors: 1st Team - senior Johnny Finnegan; 2nd Team - senior Cooper Loney, and juniors Andre Layman and Pierson Morris.

TRACK & FIELD The girls' team sent a handful of Bullpups to state, where senior Emma Van Gemert placed 3rd in the triple jump. The 4x200 relay made it to the finals before falling short of the podium. In Districts, both the 4x100 and 4x200 relays broke school records. Also competing at the State Meet were: 100m - Rhyan Madden; triple jump - Bella Yim; 800M - Noelani Krauss; high jump - Shanaya Byrd; 4x200 relay - Hannah Boyum, Kaylin McMahon, Emma Van Gemert, Rhyan Madden, Bella Yim, Katie Schmidt, 4x400 relay - Emma Van Gemert, Bella Yim, Noelani Krauss, Elena Ganea. GSL ALL-LEAGUE HONORS: 1st Team - 4x200 relay, long and triple jump - senior Emma Van Gemert; Honorable mention: High jump - senior Shanaya Byrd. For the boys, senior Caleb Richardson, who will run cross country for Gonzaga in the fall, earned All-GSL 1st-Team honors for both the 1,600M and 3,200M.

BOYS LACROSSE After completing an 11-4 season, junior Jackson Crocker and sophomores Carter Vaillancort and Christian Preti represented Gonzaga Prep in the State All-Star game. Junior Jack Condon and senior Rylan Holt were also named to the All-GSL 1st Team.
