Pediatric nurse practitioner KATHY PERKO `79 earned national recognition during her career for her work in pediatric oncology and palliative care. She is known for her expertise in helping families find tools for counseling, symptom, and pain management, and spiritual care for their children with life-limiting conditions. Her empathy and compassion for the most vulnerable children and families are her life’s mission. Her genuine generosity of spirit demonstrates what it is to be a person for others.

Kathy berko is a true person for others her career has had one Central Focus caring for children with cancer and serious illness she found it and ran the palliative care program in Portland is OHSU Doernbecher Children's Hospital for over 20 years the bridges program over her career Kathy has been recognized as an excellent condition and educator she is involved in her community serving as a board member for Catholic Charities in Portland for empathy and compassion for the most vulnerable children families in our communities that is Kathy Central life mission she has been recognized by the Children's Cancer Association the University of Portland OR alma mater American Academy of hospice and palliative care nursing the cambia health foundation in mini for her groundbreaking work she is a financial supporter of the value of her judgment education and the importance of fair share with those in her life Kathy received her undergraduate Nursing degree from the University of Portland and completed her Graduate Studies at the University of San Francisco both afforded her the opportunity to Mentor young nurses and doctors in healthcare teaching them critical skills to care for both families and patients perhaps Kathy's magnum opus has been work with Children and Families in camps for hospice care for working with chronically and terminally ill children and their families is difficult work Kathy is always known she was equipped for this kind of care because if I can do this work she would say and others might not be able to then I'm going to do this work in high school believe it or not she was terrified to speak in public a fear she faced in mr. Faulkner's class Al you'll be pleased to know that Kathy speaks in front of large crowds and nails ever I'm teaching Health Care Professionals and others about her craft the valuable lesson she still influence how Kathy looks at the world today and how she provides care to other kids she says don't worry when they're dealing I like women and condition the way adults do they are thinking about dress-up Day or about riding bikes through the hospital hallway to art class they aren't always sad there is a lot of joy in what we do 80% of kids with cancer dude better arsene provide supportive care along the way and there are all sorts of blessings are possible in case you hadn't figured it out by its bark and all in my humble opinion I think you deserve be in the Hall of Fame before me but one of the Otters this affords is that I get to be at the door first to welcome you into the Gonzaga Prep Hall of Fame heartiest congratulations
