MARGINS PROGRAM - A study of social justice issues.

For six months, thirty Gonzaga Preparatory School students have been studying major United States social justice issues, working as part of our Margins program to explore solutions to complex problems in criminal, economic, and environmental areas.

This Spring Break, students continued their study with hands-on experience in inner-city Los Angeles (criminal), New Orleans (economic), and San Francisco (environmental). While there, student groups met with government leaders like New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu (pictured to the right with Steve Gleason`95), volunteered in nonprofits like GLIDE in San Francisco, and took an acting class with incarcerated men through the Actor's Gang in Los Angeles. All of these experiences helped to expand their knowledge of major social problems, empowering them to personal action.

Their experiences have been described as "life-altering" and "a once in a lifetime opportunity." In completion of the program, these students are working to develop personalized and group action plans, or commitments to eradicating injustices, in our local community. More information about their action plans will be available online in the coming weeks
