Forrest Higgins `95 named Teacher of the Year

Forrest HigginsForrest Higgins is passionate about his vocation as a Jesuit educator—and especially passionate about Gonzaga Prep. After teaching many years at St. Ignatius College Prep in San Francisco, Mr. Higgins made the bold move back to Spokane to teach at his alma mater. He currently teaches mathematics.

Mr. Higgins teaches math by building relationships with students. “Forrest embodies cura personalis! My two boys both had Mr. Higgins as a teacher, so as a parent and a colleague, I can say Forrest truly cares for his students,” says Math Department chair Stephen Manfred. He is a teacher who is willing to take on any challenge when it comes to teaching upper-level classes. Four years ago, Forrest accepted the challenge of teaching AP Statistics while continuing his great work guiding our University of Washington Precalculus program. For Mr. Higgins, being a great teacher extends beyond the classroom where he coaches baseball and engages in the works of Campus Ministry and the Office of Service and Justice through the Magis retreat and Margins immersions trips.

Forrest speaks often about incremental growth. Using his background as a mathematics teacher he preaches his “One Percent Rule” which shared often, especially when mentoring our students in their own spiritual journey.

In July, Mr. Higgins will join our Board of Directors as the faculty board member.

Mr. Higgins continually lives the Magis! Each year he strives to become a better teacher—embracing new professional opportunities—while at the same time, seizing opportunities to serve his students and the greater Gonzaga Prep community.
