Since 1939, Bullpups have been competing on the gridiron, but it was the 1982 FOOTBALL TEAM coached by legend Don Anderson and his incredible staff that brought home the Kingbowl Six Championship in 1982. The 25-7 win over nationally ranked South Kitsap High was the first official state football championship for Gonzaga Prep and the Greater Spokane League's first state title. The success of the 1982 season was built on the shoulders of the many teams that came before and affirmed a Gonzaga Prep legacy of brotherhood and greatness.

all great feats are accomplished one small step at a time in 1982 something great happen but there is a small steps started decades before any of us walked onto the practice field at Gonzaga Prep better the first official state championship in g-prep football history since 1939 the bullpups had been competing on the Gridiron but it was our legendary head coach Don Anderson only the third coach in school history that brought home the king bull sticks Championship when he retired in 1997 coach Anderson said our theme was to win with class sometimes we lose track of that with our Sports how to win when you do when you do with class none of this to this day I've ever forgotten that but to win you also have to play well in our team led by quarterback graduates up our offensive line anchored by seniors Pete Burns and Paul Sweeney in are stingy defense overwhelmed the top team in the state for the entire season we are pulling its 3:16 to 99 giving up less than eight points a game but it was the playoffs where our defense really showed best giving up only three touchdowns in four playoff games facing the number one ranked team in the state and 4th ranked team in the country South Kitsap our entire team showed up Freddy lives had 146 yards rushing and yet another game or are Wishbone off confused kid that's highly regarded defense lunar McKenna Aaron Rob and Jamie Fitzgerald all scored touchdowns and John plays kicked a field goal to build a lead we've never give up the rest was in the hands of our Relentless defense like did all playoffs long the defense led by Bill Jekyll John cipolla Mark Schmidt paddle work Jimbo at her and McKenna Fitzgerald and Kevin Corbett on the backend make Keith stop in limited South Kitsap potent offense to only seven points and is important as we players are on the field none of us could have accomplished anything without coach Anderson and his incredible staff led by offensive coordinator Bob Peterson and his coaches Joe Dan father Jerry shop Tulane and Ted whole defensive coordinator Clarence House and his coaches h t Higgins and Brian were caught their attention to detail is second to none and they pushed us to give 100% on every play play during practice so we be at our best during the game they also taught us that our relationship with each other matter the most when he retired coach Anderson said you can take the state titles but it's the relationships I've had along the way the one you want relationships in a team concept that I've been truly blessed with we're all truly blessed to have been led by you coach Anderson and your staff and those lessons have stayed with each of us throughout our lives and we've never forgotten to win with class call my brothers and teammates on and off the field who made up the 1982 Gonzaga Prep football team wiaa state champions is my honor to welcome you to the Gonzaga Prep Hall of Fame congratulations
