Gonzaga Prep Student Serves as Page for Sen. Baumgartner

Kristian was one of 30 students who served as Senate pages for the ninth week of the 2016 legislative session. He was sponsored by 6th Legislative District Sen. Michael Baumgartner.

“I was more than happy to sponsor a young man with such a promising future. I’m glad he got a glimpse of the inner workings of this great state,” said Baumgartner, R-Spokane.

The Senate Page Program is an opportunity for Washington students to spend a week working in the Legislature. Students are responsible for transporting documents between offices, as well as delivering messages and mail. Pages spend time in the Senate chamber and attend page school to learn about parliamentary procedure and the legislative process. Students also draft their own bills and engage in a mock session.

“I really like the people here and being able to interact with them,” Kristian said about some of his favorite parts of being in the Capitol for a week. “I also liked being able to walk around the campus.”

Kristian enjoys learning about history, literature, and participating in drama. Kristian, 14, is the son of Ruth Pitts of Spokane.

Students interested in the Senate Page Program are encouraged to visit.
