College in the High School students visit GU

Gonzaga Prep’s College in the High School partnership with Gonzaga University provides an opportunity for students to earn college credit while in high school through collaboration with Gonzaga University professors.

Last week, 240 Bullpups who can potentially enroll in those college-level courses extended their experience and hopped on transports and buses to nearby Gonzaga University. The idea was the fruit of an August meeting with GU teachers, “We need to get our kids over to your campus,” said Joelle Traynor, Spanish Department chair, instructor, and liaison for Prep’s CHS partnership with GU. “We are a college prep school, our kids are taking college-level classes, and we have a college campus just a mile away.”

Traynor helped organize transportation, permission slips, and scheduling to make the morning happen. The other 5 CHS teachers accompanied the students along with both of Prep’s College Counselors and the academic vice principal.

Once there, students had the opportunity to tour the campus and then hear from a panel of GU students including a handful of Prep alumni. The panel shared anything and everything about the college experience from “How do I get involved in activities?” to “What do I do if I want to change my major?” They also took time to field questions from Bullpups. “They really listened the insights of those students. Our kids were interested and engaged,” Traynor said.

The morning concluded with insight from assistant admissions director Carie Weeks who gave students a rapid rundown of enrolling, financial aid, scholarships, what majors are offered, working on campus, and studying abroad. “She delivered a wealth of information ” and emphasized her availability for further questions.

Gonzaga Prep offers College in the High School through GU in five subjects: Spanish 102 and 201, Latin 201 and 290, Communications and Speech 100, Psychology 101, and Computer Science 121. Learn more about the program here.
