Task Force updates

INTRODUCTIONS

As a Prep alum (class of 1983) it is my honor to help facilitate the task force process and work with faculty and staff to develop greater empathy and understanding for students of color in the school, but also for the greater Spokane community. We will provide regular updates on the work of the task force.

THE TASK FORCE CHARGE

The purpose of the Equity and Inclusion Taskforce is to support the development of an institutional strategy and action plan for advancing equity and inclusion at Gonzaga Prep. The task force will provide guidance on best practices for equity and inclusion, and will carefully consider the specific requests made by the BIPOC Coalition. The task force will provide recommendations to the President, ideally by the end of November.

Update: Nov. 19, 2020

The Equity and Inclusion Task Force is continuing their regular meetings and we are currently considering plans by the administration to address issues raised by the BIPOC Coalition. The administration is actively engaged in a variety of areas to ensure that they are meeting the goals of addressing equity and inclusion in a way that allows students to feel safe and heard. We will be exploring avenues to ensure that the leadership is in regular dialogue with students, faculty, staff, and alumni in meeting the school's mission and intent related to equity.

Update: Oct. 12, 2020

The task force has met twice, with the first meeting focused on introductions and developing our goals and timeline. The second meeting was focused on developing an understanding of the context for the current concerns raised by students and alums. The task force reviewed information on activities at Prep since the 1990s. The next meeting will focus on requests made by students and alums in their letter to the administration(available on the website). One of the requests, annual training for faculty and staff, is already being initiated with a workshop beginning on October 15.
