Years at Prep: 19

The fall of 2019 will mark Ben Walker’s twentieth year teaching and working at Prep. This 1989 Gonzaga Prep graduate has taught English for the past nineteen years and worked in administration as the Dean of Students from 2009-2017. In addition to teaching Walker now works as a Co-Director of the Academic Success Center (ASC). The program has grown and services have been expanded this year to support the hundreds of students who utilize the ASC to work toward excellence in their academics. Walker said, “This work [in the ASC] is life-giving, supports all students at all levels, and, at times, it allows me to work with some of the most vulnerable students in the school. In my estimation, no work better serves the mission of Jesuit, Catholic education.” This year Walker’s Gonzaga Prep community has expanded to include his daughter who is in the freshman class. “I love watching her navigate her way through the hallowed halls of Gonzaga Prep just as I did 30 years ago,” said Walker. A lesson he hopes to share with his students and colleagues is one that is best articulated by Ferris Bueller in a quote from Ferris Bueller's Day Off: “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”
