Prep Alum & Dickens Scholar Honored by the Queen
Prep alum Dr. Paul Schlicke(`61) has been invited to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Dickens at a reception given by Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace. Dr. Schlicke, who has served as Chair of the Dickens Museum in London, is the author of Dickens & Popular Entertainment
and editor of The Oxford Companion to Charles Dickens.

Baseball Coach Inducted into Hall of Fame
(Spokane, WA) Gonzaga Preparatory School is pleased to announce that Brian Munhall, Varsity Baseball Coach, will be inducted to the Washington State American Legion Baseball Hall of Fame on November 3, 2012. Brian has been coaching baseball for years and at Gonzaga Prep for the past 4 years.
American Legion Baseball has a rich history in Washington State stretching back to 1928. Over those 85 years thousands of young men have competed in summer baseball and many of them learned skills that propelled them into becoming leaders in professional sports, business, education, government and the private sector. The fundamental goal of the American Legion Baseball program is to teach all involved about the importance of becoming good citizens and to develop life skills.
The ceremony and induction will take place in Seattle on Saturday, November 3, 2012. The first class to be inducted into the Washington State American Legion Baseball Hall includes: Earl Averill, Ron Santo, Fred Hutchinson, John Olerud, Mark Hendrickson, Bryan “Busher” Lewis, Spedo Southas, Mal Walton, Jim Clem, Lyle Overbay, Bud Black, Bob Coluccio, Curt Daniels, Steve Kline, Verne Hayertz, Ryne Sandberg, Brian Munhall, Mel Stottlemyre, Sr., Dave Heaverlo, Dave Elder, Mike Trout, and the Yakima Legion Team (1953 World Series Champs).

Alum Recognized for Volunteer Services
Prep alum Emmett Arndt `64 and his wife Marylu were recognized for their volunteer work with the Christmas Bureau. Organized by Catholic Charities, Volunteers of America, and The Spokesman Review, and funded by donations, the Christmas Bureau brings holiday cheer to the less fortunate families in the community by distributing food vouchers, books, and toys. Way to go, Emmett and Marylu! Thank you for being a great example of what it means to be persons for others!

G-Prep Senior, Andrew Sauve was a nominee in the category of "The Arts" for his involvement in Band and for playing in the band at mass as well.
Prep Junior, Kathleen Sessions was a Chase Youth Award winner as part of a group award for the Spokane Guild School's High School Board - the board won the highest honor for a group, they received the "Judge's Choice" for the most outstanding of any of the groups nominated.
Sophomore, Katelyn Jentges was awarded the highest individual award for her involvement in the community. She was recognized with the "Judges Choice" for any individual nominated in any category.
Prep Junior, JJ Brown served as a co-MC and presenter at the event as she was selected to be the 2013 Chase Youth Commission's Vice Chair.

Perfect Latin Score By Sophomore
Sophomore Phillip Thompson achieved a perfect score on the 2013 National Latin Exam. Only one half of one percent, .005, achieved this score. Worldwide 140,000 students participated from the United States, Australia, Canada, Guam, England, Italy, New Zealand, Poland, Taiwan, Indonesia, China, Philippines, Turkey, Japan, Germany, Iran, Zimbabwe and the Neterlands. Senior Pianist Places 2nd in State
Senior Angela Lee competed in the State Solo & Ensemble Competition, a WIAA competition, (April 27th). She was playing a Piano Solo, one of the most competitive events, and came in 2nd

Ignatian Service Award Recipients
Each year the Food Drive collects 100,000 pounds of food, which is delivered to 200 needy families in addition to Second Harvest Food Bank, the Spokane and Colville Native American Tribes, Morning Star Baptist Church, local parishes (Mary Queen Parish, St. Francis Xavier Parish and St. Thomas More Parish), Women and Children’s Free Restaurant, Our Place, and Guse Summit View Apartments. These members of the Class of 2013 have served on the Food Drive Committee for three years:
During the summer of 2012, two of our students traveled to another country to serve. Onew Angela Lee went to Cambodia to teach English to small children at the Hosanna School in Phnom Phen. Miriam Weeks volunteered at Familias de Esperanza, an organization that rescues families of Maestria, Mexico; a community that is built on a dump. Miriam worked in a daycare and in the water distribution center.
In January 2013, eight members of St. Aloysius Parish and two Gonzaga Prep students, Luis Perez and Josue Torres, traveled to El Salvador as part of the parish’s Sister Relationship with the Christian Base Communities, located in the Bajo Lempa region.

Alum Chosen as 2013 Astronaut Trainee
Prep alum Anne McClain `97 was chosen as a candidate in NASA's 2013 Astronaut Candidate Class. Anne, Major, U.S. Army, is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y.; the University of Bath and the University of Bristol, both in the United Kingdom. Prep alum Capt. Michael Kingen `99, a U.S. Marine Corps test pilot, completes the 500th vertical landing for the F-35B Lightning II Aug. 3 at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Md. Kingen was in BF-1, the first short takeoff and vertical landing test aircraft. Prep alumni really take their dreams to new heights!
