Physical Education Department

Department Philosophy: The purpose of the physical education department at Gonzaga Preparatory School is to instill in all students a knowledge, understanding and appreciation for the unified functioning of the body and mind.  This will provide an educational opportunity which will form Christian leaders spiritually, intellectually, physically, and culturally.

Department Requirements: 2 semesters required for graduation.  One semester must be in freshman year and one year must be in sophomore year and include a quarter of nutrition.

  • 10th,11th,12th Fitness
  • 10th,11th,12th Advanced Physical Education

Freshman Physical Education  This is a required semester class for freshmen. Participation is the primary emphasis of the class. Activities include a variety of team sports, tennis and an introduction to the weight room. A freshman will complete eight twelve minute runs graded on improvement. Daily class will include a warm-up, stretch routine and an activity.

Sophomore Physical Education This is a required semester class for sophomores. One quarter, a Health and Fitness unit is taught. Students are encouraged to make the connection between aerobic exercise and a nutritional diet as the most efficient way to attain and maintain lifelong health. Cardiovascular disease, risk factors, family health history, cholesterol, blood pressure and metabolic syndrome are included topics. The other quarter, student participation in activities is a main focus.

Weight Training This advanced conditioning course offers individualized weight and running programs for in and out of season athletes as well as a general conditioning program for non-athletes interested in personal strength development. Individualized programs offered.

Advanced Physical Education A class open to juniors and seniors designed to relieve stress and improve fitness, while having great fun! This class is an activity based PE class, including aerobic team games, individual lifetime sports, and other creative forms of exercise. Grades will be determined based on active participation and attendance.

Athletic Conditioning This class is designed to meet the needs of any student desiring to improve his/her fitness level through individualized and/or class conditioning. This would include but is not limited to the following:

  • Progressive Weight Training
  • Circuit Training
  • Aerobic/Cardiovascular Workout; aerobic boxing, Tae Bo, cycling, jogging, jump ropes
  • Flexibility progressions
  • Introduction to Plyometrics
