Community Services
Goals of the Community Service Class
To have students:
Gain an awareness of the world-in-need principally through direct contact with those needing assistance.
Identify how one is being called to serve.
Grow in self confidence in approaching those in need.
Come to a greater appreciation of one’s own gifts.
Promote social justice within our community.
Assess one’s performance and that of the agency that he/she serves.
To become a “Person for Others” and to live the Profile of the Graduate.
Requirements
Currently one quarter of Community Service is required through the Theology Dept. during a student’s senior year. Most students do Community Service for a semester.
Placements:
We are heavily involved in trying to assist the low-income area in which Gonzaga Prep is located. The vast majority of our placements are located within two miles from the school. Students are allowed to work in direct service with people who have been marginalized.
Volunteer opportunities exist:
In public and private schools: The public schools have an over eighty percent poverty rate.
English as a Second Language with adults from through-out the world.
With developmentally and physically disabled.
With the elderly.
In hospitals.
In various agencies working with disadvantaged children (ex. Boys and Girls Club. Edu-care)
The agencies that we are working with include: St. Aloysius Elem. School, St. Patricks Elem. School, Trinity Elem. School, Bemiss Elem. School, Logan Elem. School, Regal Elem. School, Stevens Elem. School, Longfellow Elem. School, Madison Elem. School, Institute for Higher Learning (Adult ESL Students), Arc Community Center (Developmentally Disabled Adults), Center Pointe (Developmentally Disabled Adults), L’Arch (Developmentally Disabled) Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, Holy Family Hospital, Boys and Girls Club, Martin L. King Center, St. Anne’s Children Home, Deaconess Medical Center, Riverview Care Center and North Central Care Center. Students are also able to find their own agency so long as it meets the criteria of our class.
General Orientation:
·Discussion aimed at increasing the student’s awareness of the needy in our society.
·Discussion of the Christian response.
·Review of the Community Service booklet.
·Information given to students of various community service options and placements. Previous and current students reflect on their CS experience.
Direct Service Experience:
·Students spend from three and a half to four hours per week in their service placement.
·Students assume the same responsibilities of regular staff members.
·Students work directly with people in need.
Reflection Aspects:
·Weekly papers are designed to assist students in fully examining the needs of society and to determine their individual response.
·Personal journals are written to establish goals, reflect on performance, and to gain a better understanding of self and others. ·Students are constantly challenged to evaluate the class, their performance, and the agency’s performance.
Special Project:
·Students are asked to do something out of the ordinary in their placement.
·Students are encouraged to visit other placements.
·Students are encouraged to do additional reading in the field in which they are working.
Facilitator Visitations:
·The teacher will frequently visit and be in touch with the various agencies in which he has assigned students.
Grading
·Neither field work nor academic work by itself is sufficient to pass the class.
·Sixty percent of a student’s grade is determined by her fieldwork.
·Hour requirements are from three and a half to four hours a week.
·Students are required to a special project to be eligible to receive an “A” grade. Extra credit work is available upon request.
·Forty percent of a student’s grade is determined by his academic work.
·Weekly journals and papers are assigned.
